Wordful Wednesday

First of all just let me say, I have no business being in an early childhood classroom.

Why, you ask? I have the weakest stomach ever. Boogers, Snot, Accidents, and Sick Kids make my tummy all kinds of queasy. You would think that after five years I would totally get used to it. Nope, not me. While, I love Fall.. I do not love the beginning of sick season. I just get worked up thinking a kid could be sick. I would be mortified to get sick at school due to my weak stomach. Since my kids rarely make it to the trash can....

Or to the bathroom...

This my friend, is a teachers best friend. When one of my little dears loses their lunch.. I grab the quick absorb. Squeeze my eyes shut and start shaking the container in the general vicinity. All the while, my stomach is turning flip flops and I am bargaining with GOD. Please, let this pass please let this pass... Some how this stuff hides the smell and quickly absorbs it. Then the janitorial staff will come and take care of it.. then I spray the lysol and Fabreeze like a crazy woman...lol.

See, my friends, that is exactly why I have no business being in an early childhood classroom...

Things, I thought I would never hear myself say:

ME: Please, get your meat off your head.

ME: Don't scratch your friends rear.

ME: Please tell me you didn't get that gum from under the bleachers.

_____________________________________________

Reasons, I belong in an early childhood classroom:

I love that they love me. I love them too.

I love the excitement they have for everything..

I love introducing them to new things.

I love getting messy with paints.

I love singing silly goofy songs.

I love dancing and laughing with them.

I love their innocence and I try to protect it.

I love that they go home at 3 and their parents have to deal with them after a day full of activities and a sugary afternoon snack..( you love me for my honesty right)

More to come... I am sure..

I totally have to get me some of that!

Well your pro list is longer than your con list:) I can only imagine how quick on your feet you must be when you see the bodily fluids coming out!

What a great way to start my day!

Ahh, yes- I remember this "quick absorb" you speak of from my days in grade school. What is it with little kids? Why can't you tell you're about to spew all over everything child?

latree said...

ooh you are a 'cool' teacher!

Very funny! At least you love more than you can't stand, right?! I know that I can't deal with the whole throwing up thing. Mine are old enogh that I tell them they better hit the trash can because I don't deal with chunks. *ick* I am so afraid I will get sick in there, too, one of these days.
Oh, that list of things you never thought you would hear yourself say....isn't it amazing what comes out of your mouth? Very funny! No scratching each other's rears...I love that one!
Happy Wednesday!

So funny! I never wanted to be a teacher for some of those very reasons, but my OWN kid's bodily excretions only bothered me occasionally. I was quite thankful for that! I'm sure that your littles love you just as much as you love them.

Oh, the smell memory you brought back to me of when somebody chucked and the janitor came with that horrible smelling sawdust stuff. That was worse than what it was supposed to cover up.

larkswing said...

Ha! my youngest was the one always suddenly having gum in his mouth . . . from under tables, chairs, out of an ashtray at the movies one time- YIKES! It was a horrific phase!

Fun post - great list!

When I taught school, I couldn't not handle it if kids played or fooled around with their "eyes"...like flipping the lid...AHHHH...-Sandy Toes

At least you know your limitations!!! You sound like a fun early childhood teacher!

A magical WW to you!

LOL!:)

I, too, have a very weak stomach.

I remember being in elementary school when stomach viruses would run their course. Occasionally, someone would not be able to make it to the trash or the bathroom, and they would puke right in the middle of the classroom. Then the teacher would (run like crazy) to get some kind of pink nasty smelling sawdust stuff to throw on top of the vomit. It was so sickening! Is that what is in the container that you showed us a picture of?

With raising two boys....and seeing various amounts of disgusting things, I have bargained with God a time or five myself.;)

I think your reasons of why you belong in an early childhood classroom, far outweigh the reasons that you don't.:)

You are a blessing to each of those children....boogers, snot, and all.;)

Keep up the good work, teacher!:)
God Bless,
Amy:)

Pleasant Living said...

Ooohh, I'm right there with ya with the whole vomiting thing. In my four years as the teacher of a primary classroom, I've never had a child puke in my room yet, but I'm always fearful :(

valerie said...

Oh, I know....when I used to teach kindergarten and one of the kids would throw up I would start gagging.....I couldn't help myself. That smell!!!
I would feel so bad for them, but I could not get near it! I'd send for the janitor. ;)

And, the snotty noses. I'll never forget one little boy who always had thick runny snot. I remember feeling so sorry for him because I felt like he couldn't breathe & wished he could have allergy shots or something.

Isn't this a lovely topic for early morning? :)

You're a wonderful teacher and I know the kids love you so much. If you were my child's teacher I would feel so blessed to drop them off every day knowing they were in the hands of someone who truly loved their "job."

I love that you love to be in the classroom......even if you have to contend with the gross stuff sometimes. :) I don't even like cleaning up my own kids! :)

Get your meat off you head:)

I love going into my son's class and loved it last year also. But the thought of being in complete control of 20 6yr olds terrifies me. Even though his teacher did leave me in control once last year and I made it and entire hour and a half with no major episodes.

I do however think I would love to be a TA or EA not sure what you call them, I enjoy going to his class and helping the kids with their word lists and such. This is my goal for when #2 starts school in 3yrs.

Joy said...

Oh and I totally can not do big kid vomit either. I gag when my kids throw up.

great post - very funny! I would never last either! I have the weakest tummy!

Kids are hilarious! I'm with you on the accidents though. It's all I can do not to throw up when I see someone else throw up.

I bet you are an amazing teacher though!

Faith said...

I am so with you! When I taught pre-school and one of the kids got sick, I had to run out of the room and my poor assistant cleaned it up! I did get some practice first hand a couple of weeks ago when my sweet niece got sick at our house. It's not fun though!

Annikke said...

WHat a fun post! I needed this giggle this morning! Thanks!

Lindsay said...

I think it's awesome how much you love your job...and not the snot. If I could give away anything in parenting, it would be the poop, hands down - so see, you're not the only one!! Even parents don't like it :-)

Lindsey said...

You sound like a great teacher! And I laughed outloud reading the "things I thought I'd never hear myself say"!

This is so funny!!

Deb said...

hysterical! do you think that stuff only works on puke or could i use it for "doggie accidents"?

Melissa said...

I am right there with you with the whole sick thing...I'm so bad about the puke thing that my kids know not to even come around me if/when they aew gonig to do it.... They have to go to the bathroom/trash can...whatever, get it done and then come tell me.... uuuggghhh!! I hate that I am a freak about that!!

Brandy said...

I love the Thing I Never Thought I'd Say list it was too funny.

amy (metz) walker said...

Ha HA ha! Hilarious!

My friend who works at a daycare just told me the janitor had to clean up some poopy fingerpainting this morning...

Anonymous said...

:D LOL! Been there, done that!

When I taught middle school, one of my students threw up in class. All I could do was (as I'm walking very quickly for the door) tell everyone to come outside, send the sick kid to the nurse, and radio for a clean up. We had class in another room for the rest of the period - all because I'm a copycat puker!

Also love your list. You just keep reconfirming what I already knew - you're a rockin teacher!

Simply AnonyMom said...

I wish my DS had a teacher like you. You always crack me up and make your classsroom sound so fun. His teacher (well 2 of the 3) are like sticks in the mud. They do not belong with 4 yr olds. I think you do :)

He & Me + 3 said...

OMGosh! YOu are so funny. I worked in early childhood too until I had my own and then I couldn't handle all the kids..LOL
Seriously, I can so relate to your things I never thought I would say. Don't scratch your friends rear...so funny! Still cracking up. I think I have said that a time or two also.

Danyele Easterhaus said...

gross...and let me say, my #2 just puked in the car today. boooo!

Rachel said...

The list of "i never" is rad.

I never thought that kids would stick there hands in there cracks during circle time and then try and touch me.....

Don't ya love em?

debi9kids said...

LOL! I don't deal well with sick season either and actually had one of the kids home today because of an "upset stomach". Turns out, he was faking. Ok, so tuth be told, I'd much prefer faking than cleaning puke :)

Michelle said...

Despite your queazy gut, I'll bet you are an awesome teacher! I actually can't stand those things either which is why I was blessed with children that don't vomit. :)

Michele said...

Oh Becky...you are toooo funny! I know that it's not funny when the kids get sick, but it's just how you phrased it.

I think my kids would have loved having you for a teacher!

Michele

OH MY GOODNESS! I totally hear ya on this one. I work at the Boys & Girls Club and well, I am a germ-a-phobe. I don't know how I do it with all the sneezing, wet doorknobs that make you wonder, but there are so many things that are so great about workin' with the kids!!

Kathleen W. said...

That's great! I too was a teacher before I became a SAHM, and I hated when accidents happened. I totally relate to your bargaining with god about letting you get through it.

Becky,

You visited my blog and asked what kind of editing tool I use. I use the favorite free tool online called picnik. Go to www.picnik.com it is truly awesome and amazing what you can do with your pictures. It is fun too. Super easy too!

I am right there with you on the weak stomach thing!
Never in my life did I think at some point I would be changing diarrhea filled diapers for a living. Thank God she can go to the potty now, that's all I'm saying.

I also have a list of things I never thought I would say. Some of them include,
"Because I said so"
"You can pretend the broccoli is a tree! And you're a giraffe!"
"I'm giving you to the count of 5 and then you're in your room for time out."

And I thought only parents said these things...

Unknown said...

Ok, I am fine with my OWN kids bodily fluids but other people's kids? NOT SO MUCH! You're more brave than me for sure!!

OKay - if that quick absorb stuff is the same stuff they used to use on the school bus to absorb someone's chuck - then just the smell of that would make me lose it! It's worse than the original problem if you ask me!!!!!!!!!

That being said - early childhood teachers are a gem and I don't know how anyone does it - so kudos to you!
